Apple officially dropped public betas for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and macOS 27 “Golden Gate” on July 13, 2026, pivoting the entire ecosystem around a rebuilt Siri AI system. The desktop update addresses past Liquid Glass missteps with sharper contrast and mandatory background app transparency, while iOS 27 delivers up to 30 percent faster app launches alongside a new customization slider and revamped parental controls. Compatibility took a significant hit across all platforms, with Apple Intelligence features locked to newer chips and several older devices officially cut.

Apple Releases Public Betas for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and macOS 27 “Golden Gate”

The long wait for the next generation of Apple’s software is over. Public betas for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and macOS 27 “Golden Gate” dropped simultaneously on July 13, 2026. This isn’t a trickle of incremental updates. You’re looking at a full ecosystem shift centered around a rebuilt Siri, aggressive performance tuning, and a much-needed course correction for Liquid Glass.

Apple kicked off the developer previews back on June 8, followed by a second and third developer build before finally opening the floodgates to the general public. If you’re planning to test these on your daily driver, keep in mind that public beta 1 is still exactly that. Apple describes it as the “stablest iOS beta in a very long time,” which usually means fewer crashes than usual, not zero bugs. You’ll need an active Apple Beta Software Program account to download the profile. Don’t install it on your primary machine without a backup.

macOS 27 “Golden Gate” Tries to Fix What Tahoe Broke

macOS 27 is codenamed “Golden Gate” for a reason. Apple is explicitly trying to paper over the cracks from macOS Tahoe’s Liquid Glass rollout. The unified corner radius is finally here. The glass effect itself got a visual tune-up with clearer centers, darker edges, and sharper highlights. It’s a pragmatic approach to a design language that split the desktop crowd down the middle.

Siri is no longer just a tap-and-wait voice assistant. Apple Intelligence has been completely rebuilt to handle ongoing conversations, pull context from Mail and Notes, and understand what’s on your screen. Responses now bubble up from the Dynamic Island. A dedicated Siri app syncs your history to iCloud. Power users will also appreciate the new background app transparency. Quitting an app no longer hides it from the process list. That directly addresses the recent backlash over apps like Google Gemini sneaking around in the background. Safari gets AI tab organization, a “Notify Me” feature for tracking restocked items, and a natural-language extension builder. Spotlight is also getting a reliability overhaul after Tahoe’s rocky start.

Compatibility takes a hit, as usual. Apple is dropping support for several older Macs. Apple Intelligence features require the newer Apple Intelligence-compatible models. If you’re waiting for higher resolution ultrawide display support, it’s there. Apple is quietly pulling AirPort Utility from the App Store. Time Capsule will apparently survive via community patches.

iOS 27 Brings Raw Performance Gains and a Liquid Glass Slider

iPhone and iPad users aren’t getting the short end of the stick either. iOS 27 focuses heavily on speed, with apps launching up to 30% faster. Nearby AirDrop transfers hit an 80% boost. New photo captures hit the Photos app roughly 70% quicker. Apple optimized the CPU scheduler back to iPhone 11 hardware. That should smooth out the overall feel across the board. If you need more room to customize the glass interface, a new slider in Settings lets you dial Liquid Glass from ultra-clear to fully tinted.

Siri AI mirrors the macOS upgrade here. It pulls responses from the Dynamic Island and offers a standalone conversation app. Voice controls let you tweak pace and expressivity. English support is limited at launch. EU rollout is officially off the table for now. Apple is also pulling back the curtain on its infrastructure. A new permission prompt will explicitly notify you when Apple Intelligence features send data to Google Cloud servers. It’s a transparent move, though it still gives privacy advocates plenty to debate.

Parental controls are finally getting the overhaul they’ve needed. Screen Time now features category-based allowances, granular schedules, and an expanded “Ask to Browse” flow. Communication Safety is also picking up gore detection alongside its existing nudity filters. iPadOS 27 shares the core upgrade but adds an optional persistent menu bar. Resizable iPhone apps are here too. Grammarly-style keyboard corrections are rolling out to all iPadOS devices.

tvOS 27 and The Hardware Tax

The Apple TV and HomePod betas dropped on the same day. tvOS 27 is noticeably stripped down in this public release. Apple quietly confirmed in the code that Siri AI support will arrive later. That functionality is gated behind the expected fall 2026 Apple TV 4K hardware refresh. What you get now is a redesigned Podcasts app with video playback support. Apple Music AutoMix transitions are included. Hi-Res Lossless audio routing is there too. Updating your TV from the Home app on your iPhone is a nice quality-of-life touch. The beta drops support for two older Apple TV models.

Compatibility across the board continues its steady decline. Apple is collectively dropping support for 16 products. iOS and iPadOS 27 maintain the iPhone 11 and newer baseline. Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Advanced on-device features lock to the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, or iPhone Air. watchOS 27 is even more restrictive. It covers only Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and SE 3.

It’s a rather feature-heavy beta drop, though the hardware gating and shrinking compatibility list will inevitably frustrate some. Apple’s pushing AI hard. However, at the same time, the actual on-device performance gains in iOS 27 are the most tangible upgrade so far. The full public release is slated for fall 2026 across all platforms.
