Apple posted one of the best third quarters in its history Wednesday -- as record sales of Mac computers and strong iPod demand drove a 73 percent jump in profit -- and said it has its sights set on selling 1 million of its new iPhone devices by the end of the current quarter. Apple easily beat Wall Street predictions for the quarter that ended in June, with revenue rising 24 year over last year to $5.41 billion.

The old record store has all but fled the mall and found a happy home online, and the compact disc may soon join vinyl in the musical dustbin. Apple's iTunes Store has sold more than 2 billion tracks in its four-year history, and the number of online music store users has been growing at about 50 percent a year. Apple's the biggest, but it isn't the only option for digital music.
