After years of speculation and preparation, Amazon.com launched its digital music store Tuesday, debuting Amazon MP3 and promising a wide selection of music unfettered by DRM restrictions. The Seattle-based e-tail giant launched what it's calling a public beta of the download store with 2 million songs available from 180,000 different artists -- all without digital rights management restrictions.

Apple issued a warning late Monday to iPhone owners who may have emancipated their device from its exclusive carrier, AT&T, that future firmware updates could cause the modified phones to stop working altogether. In addition, the company cautioned that once the phones have been unlocked, its Apple warranty becomes null and void.

iTunes users in select cities will soon be able to walk into a Starbucks coffee shop to satisfy two cravings at once -- one for a cup of joe and the other for free music downloads. The freebies will begin Oct. 2, Starbucks and Apple announced Monday, and will include songs performed by Annie Lennox, Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Joss Stone and Paul McCartney.
